Visiting CIPA: Successful Registry Modernisation in Botswana

Our team members Agnese Abelite and Sumit Poddar recently travelled to Gaborone, Botswana, to spend time with the Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA), one of our long-standing customers in Africa.

The visit brought our teams together for hands-on workshops, open conversations and a closer look at CIPA’s priorities for the future of its Companies Register, Beneficial Ownership Register and wider digital services.

It was also an opportunity to recognise the incredible work CIPA and the Ministry have done. Botswana’s Companies Register and Beneficial Ownership Register demonstrate the country’s commitment to modernising corporate registries, strengthening transparency and delivering better services to businesses and citizens.

That work has not gone unnoticed. Botswana’s approach and achievements are frequently recognised by fellow registries across Africa, as well as international organisations and observers, making the country an important voice in conversations around registry modernisation and beneficial ownership.

What stood out during the visit was the ambition and dedication of the people behind the registers. The CIPA team were incredibly hospitable, open and engaged, making the workshops highly productive and giving us an even better understanding of the realities, challenges and opportunities ahead.

Successful registry transformation is about much more than technology. It happens when people, policy, legislation, operations and technology move forward together.

A huge thank you to the CIPA team for the fantastic welcome, collaboration and continued partnership.
